Oh the hilarity!

Posted in Web Stuff on August 29th, 2007 by Ast

So I just happened to come across some really amusing stuff. First of all, Orneryboy… Dear lord this is amusing. The particular screencap that I have here is a tribute to all those that are unafraid to be non-PC. I almost peed when I read this one, I laughed so hard Here. Go see.

Now since I am already posting things that will undoubtedly offend people, lets go for a 2-fer! I want a car that runs on babies! That would be awesome, in a really sick, population control kind of way. Don’t tell me you’ve never had that kind of thought. Don’t look at me in that tone of voice.

Finally, here it is, the Mitnick Card. For those of you that are a little to distantly separated from the geek community, Kevin Mitnick is a Canadian that mastered social engineering and finally ended up in jail for hacking into US Government computers. He’s out now, and this continues to be funny to me…

Man killed by spiders while the government steals his rights!

Posted in Info Freedom, Web Stuff on August 29th, 2007 by Ast

Welcome to the latest edition of my ongoing warped web publication. Today we are going to talk about things that creep me out and things that piss me off. Doesn’t that sound like fun, boys and girls? I thought so. So let’s start off with the creepy stuff. I hate spiders. They creep me out. I was attacked by a bunch of spiders when I was a kid. It required some serious medical attention. Ever since then I have kind of had an aversion. Understandable I think. Anyway, some guy was keeping a bunch of potentially deadly spiders as pets. Dumbass. The spiders ganged up on him and killed him. Glad I wasn’t anywhere near.

Want to publish on your own because you don’t buy into the corporations that specialize in selling books? Hmm. Well, you probably won’t have a national bestseller, but at the same time, you can fulfill all of your paranoid fantasies by learning about self publishing through Guerilla Press. Kind of interesting, in a DIY bookbinding, spending too much of my free time doing this kind of way.

Ever want to have someone explain, in simple words, how Einstein’s theory of relativity works? Me too. Dammit, Jim, I’m a mathematician not a… never mind.

I found this graphic amusing. There really isn’t much more to it than that. It’s a geeky joke and I am all about those.

Finally, the thing that really torked me off today… Forcing a company to keep records of volitile information so that some corporate asshole can come by and troll through the records to “find wrongdoers.” Fuck that. I am seriously sick of the judicial system catering to big business simply because they control the purse strings. It’s high time that someone stand up and say something!

Math clocks and ghost pops

Posted in Web Stuff on August 27th, 2007 by Ast

So, I have spent most of today working on getting things done here and there on the web… actually working, sheesh! Anyway, I still managed to find a few interesting tidbits on the web take a look and see what I mean. First off, I found a really cool clock that describes all of the time on the clock in expressions with the number 9, for instance 9/9 in place of 1. Very interesting.

Crazy clock... I like it

Somebody went and re-wired a vending machine to do some really interesting “ghostly” tricks. I want this vending machine in my office’s breakroom. I think it would be hysterical! Talking vending machines are right up there with cashiers that have Jedi powers. Seriously, you need to see this hack!

Buy Ghostpops!

…And now for something from the disgusting room.  Yes, I have one of those and a shit monster lives in there.  It’s bad.  Seriously.  Anyway, students at the Hiroshima University have been getting sick for the past ten years and the school just figured out why.  The plumbing was mis-installed and sewerage from flushed toilets was being directed straight to a drinking fountain.  How nasty is this? “Hey, Joe!  I think I just drank some of your pee!  Mighty tasty.”

Dave Matthews said it best: Don't drink the water.

Finally a few thoughts on sleeping, dreams and hallucinations.  This was a great frame!  I am amused.

L’Feé Verte

Posted in Web Stuff on August 24th, 2007 by Ast

So I “stumbled” upon this British site selling absinthe and all of a sudden a slight twinge of sadness crossed the recesses of my mind. I bought a bottle of Absente, the closes thing to absinthe sold in the US. This by itself would be alright, except that the bottle was squandered. : ( I have been longing for that licorice taste since the bottle was finally drained. There is something very alluring about absinthe and all of its cousins aside from the romance of a banned alcohol. There is a feeling that can’t be descibed that comes from drinking it. I was looking at prices of French absinthe and the least expensive that would be worth drinking is about $50 plus another $40 or so for shipping. I’m pretty sure that I can’t swing $90 for a bottle of absinthe right now. I promise you, though, that as soon as I can afford it I’ll have them ship me three 70cl bottles, which puts me just below the limit that you can import at a time. You are allowed to import 2.25 liters and no more into the US. Three 70cl bottles should do me just fine. For now, though, I miss it. *tear*

*Update:  Yay!  I can afford a new bottle of Absente!  Life is looking up a touch more for the day!  I’m sitting here at my desk doing a happy dance.  Mmmm… licoricey goodness!

Geek Girl of the Day

Posted in Geek Girl of the Day on August 24th, 2007 by Ast

Ok, so I have found yet another girl that is into geeky stuff that I know almost nothing about.  One thing I can tell you is that she is into Debian…  Dig the shirt?  Now, technically I use Ubuntu at home but Ubuntu is built on Debian, and for the most part, Ubuntu IS a Debian system.  With that in mind, I fully support this girl’s choice in OS.  Cheers, you are Geek Girl of the Day!

Linux misconceptions

Posted in Linux on August 24th, 2007 by Ast

I thought this was particularly interesting.  This is an article about the 5 misconceptions that people have regarding Linux and its users.  Being that I am a Linux user, I feel that a little light could afford to be shed on the subject of Linux.  It’s not an operating system meant solely for the computer freaks that sit in dark corners and play in MUDs and on IRC all day.  I remember those days.  They weren’t good for the Linux image.  Things are different now.  KDE has K3B.  That alone should be enough reason to consider switching. : D

Sue-happy bastards!

Posted in Info Freedom on August 24th, 2007 by Ast

So there has been an all-new vision of corporate control over art. The RIAA has been suing for a while, and the suits continue. They are now suing 16 students for damages of $750 per song they illegally downloaded. This is completely outside of the realm of acceptable policy. The only reason that I can think the American judiciary would accept this is that they have their collective hand in the RIAA’s pocket all the way up to the elbow. Since the students could download any song from iTunes for $0.99, I don’t know how the RIAA or the presiding judge could ever see 750% gain an acceptable retribution. This whole thing just sickens me as things progress. All of a sudden I have pangs of distaste toward Metallica again, who seemed to be the spearhead for this whole campaign. That’s right, guys. People think your product stinks so you stoop to extortion to recoup your losses. Just go out of business already and leave us alone!

While we are on the topic of my complete outrage, lets take a look at the 19-year-old girl that is currently being sued by Regal Entertainment for filming the first 20 seconds of the Transformers movie to show her friend.   The local District Attourney was “pressured” by Regal Entertainment to prosecute Jhannet Sejas for copyright infringement.  Now, mind you, I don’t endorse filming the entire movie and distributing it…  There is just a certain amount of wrong-ness to showing up to a movie with a camcorder, but Jhannet claims that she was trying to encourage her friend to see the movie.  This sounds like “education” which falls under fair use.  Hmmm.  Aside from that, who the hell does Regal Entertainment think they are?  Even the MPAA is leaving this one alone…  Not only that, but I can assure you that regardless of the outcome, Jhannet will undoubtedly never use a Regal Cinema again.  Argh!

Goths, Geeks and Guns…

Posted in Web Stuff on August 24th, 2007 by Ast

Hell yeah! Some of the great things in life and they all come together here. How can you go wrong? So let’s start off with the Goth thing. Seems as good a place as any. For those of you that missed it, this past weekend was Bat’s Day in the Fun Park. For the uninitiated, Bat’s Day is the day Goths invade Disneyland. I was, of course, there… spending too much money. But that’s beside the point. Oh! And I got a Mickey bat pin… and OFFICIAL Mickey Bat Pin! That glows in the dark! They were “coincidentally” released the same day the Goths got to town… Anyway, all of that aside, pictures have been posted to Flickr.

And just a quick comment, here is a picture from the set linked to above of my friends Brenda and Chesh with some of their friends. (With which, some of whom I am acquainted and others not so much)

Brenda, Chesh and crew

Now, if I can only find the 3 photos that were taken of me while I was there… hrm. While on the topic of Disney, check out this video game. It’s called Los Disneys and it’s about a post apocalyptic world where Disney and Co. have taken over and rule the world. Your job is to destroy Walt Disney’s cryogenically stored head and escape total annihilation. Sounds interesting to me.

Ok, let’s get away from Disney completely; I think that anyone who knows me knows that I am a fan of all that is sick, twisted and otherwise a little off from center. This is how I was built, don’t ask me. I don’t know. Anyway, I found this picture and I just thought it was too cool. Perhaps an interesting idea for a Halloween theme sometime… Broken angels, or something like that. Anyway, here you go:

Ok, so you know how I was talking about steampunk the other day? (Click here for a reminder) Well, I found something that was just too cool. It’s a steampunk raygun! Hell yeah! I am all over this. Perhaps I’ll invent a new kind of Goth… SteamGoth! I’ll do the vintage 19th century industrial look. That would be SO COOL! I am all over this! Now, where’s my duster? …

And for my final piece regarding this post, here’s a little bit of pure geek-joy. It’s a guy that figured out how to generate different tones with a Tesla coil and now performs music on it. It’s bright, it’s loud… and it’s cool. Can’t go wrong with this kind of geek fun!
