Who, precisely, does Comcast think they are?

Posted in Net Neutrality on August 23rd, 2007 by Ast

Ok, as if my irritation was not great enough with the discussion of net neutrality vs. big companies, Comcast has decided that they are going to block torrent access on their networks.  Now, understandably, torrent downloads have been associated with pirating, but it is also associated with things like GNU/Linux and free software.  No, not pirated, free, as in monetarily free, psychologically free.  This disgusts me.  Who gave these companies the right to dictate what someone does on the internet?  Is it legal?  Yes?  Then fuck off.  Leave me to do what I choose.  I am sick of these stupid games.  People really like to quote Revelations when discussing the end of the world and the true believers.  The mark that they all talk about will be the stain of corporations perverting everything they touch.  The faithful will be the ones that truly understand the value of freedom.  Let information live as it is supposed to!  Not only do these companies limit the rights of people as they cut the populace off from the world of information, but they kill information.  Let the data stream flow or so help us we will liberate it!  For information on the Comcast situation, read here:

Geek Girl of the Day

Posted in Geek Girl of the Day on August 23rd, 2007 by Ast

Today’s Geek Girl, much like yesterday’s will remain nameless.  Actually, THEY will remain nameless and faceless.  I tried to come up with the source of this photo on DumpALink.com, but to no avail.  So, if anyone knows who took this photo and could send me a link to their page I would greatly appreciate it.  Anyway, these four girls all made it at once.  How could you go wrong with girls that have math and physics written on their backs, in a library?  Congrats, girls.  You have collectively been named Geek Girl of the Day!

Sexy Japanese One-Eyed Mummies!

Posted in Web Stuff on August 23rd, 2007 by Ast

I thought that might get your attention. So, yeah, the one-eyed sexy Japanese thing. I don’t know if you are aware, but it is becoming popular for girls to wear bandages and eye patches in Japan. No, seriously, hear me out. It’s called “kegadoru,” or “injured idols.” They are making dolls, models are posing in this strange regalia and moreover they are making female superheroes in bandages and patches and such! Don’t buy it? Fine, see for yourself:

For the next picture I have very little of anything to say. I want this house. That’s kind of it. I like the photo.

For the next thing, I have a little project that you can try out. I think I might give it a go some time later this month or early next month. Who knows how this is going to go… Anyway, it’s a how-to on stenciling with bleach. This way you can create cool-looking shirts with nothing more than some household supplies. I dig it. I am going to start working on stencil designs…

Now for something with a little heart. A mouse. (ha ha… canned laughter.) Anyway, seriously, I found a story about a dog that was so faithful to its owner that it continued to wait for him for 11 years after he died. It’s actually rather touching. The guy died and the poor dog didn’t know, so every evening he would go to the train stop and wait for his owner to come home. Just read the story already:

Ok, enough of that heartfelt stuff. Something cool and geeky. The first cyber-war is on! Until recently, cyber-fighting was basically small skirmishes between hackers and hackers, or hackers and some government organization. That was until Tuesday, August 21, 2007. This is when hackers declared WWI (WEB War I), as the article dubs this attack. Estonia was attacked and systematically shut down through a Bot/DOS attack on some of the most important elements of the country. Estonia came to a cyber stand-still. This is wild.

Oh, oh!! Stealth trees!

Posted in Web Stuff on August 22nd, 2007 by Ast

Ok, you all have seen the weird-ass metal palm trees that house cell towers, right? Well, my friend and I used to make jokes about them and say that they (the trees) were trying to convince everyone that they were in fact trees and NOT cell towers. How funny is it to find out that they are called “stealth trees?” God I am in hysterics right now… in my mind… laughing out loud at work would be bad… whatever. People bitch about the big silver cell towers in their area so the cell companies decided to make these *snicker* “stealth trees” because they are more aesthetically pleasing… Whatever. It looks like a big, ugly, brown and green cell tower, with leaves on it. Ok, so I am amused…

I'm a palm tree!!

Attack of the Paper Cut-Outs

Posted in Web Stuff on August 21st, 2007 by Ast

So, today’s theme seems to be paper cut-outs. I don’t make this stuff up, I find it on the internet. Seriously. Anyway, the first thing, I guess, isn’t so much a paper cut-out as it is a printable thing. Need a calendar? Not one you can write in, but just one to keep track of the date? You do? Then you’re in luck. This site is set up so you can print out a years worth of calendar info on one page. I believe it actually downloads to your computer as a PDF. Check it out:

Free Printable Calendars

Once you are done getting organized, then you can print off a camera. No joke! You want a camera? Perhaps your kid has been asking for one. That’s great because you can now easily print out the handy dandy Dirkon pinhole camera for assembly in your own home. Ok, so it is just a pinhole camera, but it still makes for a cool science project. You could probably even use it to photograph an eclipse, although I’m not promising that one. Have scissors, heavyweight paper and a lot of time on hand for this one. This is not a small-scale project, but then paper mods aren’t always quick or easy.

Now, for the next item, I couldn’t resist. I had to print one out and build it. Since we are doing flatpack stuff, then this is perfect. Someone took an art project and turned it into a free-to-download toy set that you can print and build yourself. Everything is meant to print on a single piece of 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper in color. Personally I chose the zombie boy. It’s actually a little gross, but I like it. Hopefully my coworkers won’t find the rotting paper thing on my desk too offensive…

My final slap in the face of all that is right and good in the world is Stupid.com. Stupid.com specializes in selling things that they think are generally stupid or useless. Personally I thought it was thoroughly amusing. They have suck wonders and sundry items as Nihilist Gum which has no flavor, a snot-nosed egg separator and my personal favorite, Horrified B-Movie Victims. Yes, you can have a horror scene right there on your desk. The construction on these puppies is the same as the little green army men of long ago, or the dumb quarter vending machine toys at the grocery store. Anyway, check out stupid!

Oh yeah, it’s a steaming pile of web goodness.

Posted in Web Stuff on August 20th, 2007 by Ast

Ok, the day is only halfway through and so I am sure that I could find more things to post. However today’s theme seems to be steampunk. Why? ‘Cause I said so. I am digging this whole idea. Take modern stuff, tweak it, make it look old and then finally incorporate it into daily use. Now, this probably suits me because I am a big fan of carrying a pocketwatch, decorating with antiques, floor-length coats and anything that seems vaguely reminiscent of times gone by. I don’t honestly know why I like this stuff, but I do. I am all about the tactile and visual wonders that can only come from something that has been mouldering in an attic for the past 100 years. Anyway, I suppose the first order of business is to cover what steampunk is. Here’s what Wikipedia had to say:

Wikipedia on Steampunk

Now, what I have been mulling over all morning, while I have been doing intranet updates and such here at work, is how to incorporate the steampunk look into the industrial club scene that is so prominent in the Southern California Gothic community. Perhaps I’ll write an article on this for the webzine once I start to get it all sorted out. In the meanwhile I will look tenderly upon my shiny new pocketwatch. No, it’s not my first. My collection is now up to 5! 4 are actually in my posession, the last is in my parents’ safe deposit box. It’s an antique railroad watch and I would prefer that it remain someplace safe. The 4 that I have range in value from about $25 all the way up to about $110, so don’t get any bright ideas that my “general use” collection has a particularly high dollar value on it. They are pretty much sentimental only. I love them and that’s why I have them. I got 2 new ones this weekend, though, so I will most likely be posting pictures of them here later. Anyway, speaking of steampunk, I found a cool site the other day, but it just didn’t fit into what I was posting, so you get it today. This guy is pretty cool.

Steampunk Workshop

Finally, I found a site that has so much good stuff I couldn’t help but post it. I am just generally enjoying the hell out of this. Do you like HP Lovecraft? Do you like mustaches? Do you love Cthulhu? Of course you do. So do I. Check out Ectoplasmosis! It’s almost as good as this blog… Heh, I think too highly of my own work, methinks.
