Field Trip: The Davis Cemetery

Grave Gate

Grave Gate

I haven’t decided if I am going to make “Field Trip” a regular/semi-regular thing or not.  I’m trying it out.  Anyway, I made a trip out to the Davis, CA cemetery and took some photos.  I am in Davis about once a month and I always mean to bring a camera.  I never remember to, so this time around I did something about it.  I went and bought myself a Holga 135.  Think of a cheap-ass camera with a couple of features built in that make it much nicer than your average cheap-ass camera.  It’s about $50 give or take, depending where you buy it.

I am used to working with a Diana, so I am familiar with the low-fi feel of the photos, but I also know that with a little time and care, you can get some great shots out of them.  The important thing to keep in mind is that you are shooting film so you have some forgiveness in framing as you can scan and crop later.  Mind you, I also shoot using a Canon SLR or DSLR depending on what I want to acheive, so I don’t always work with plastic lenses or anything.  Please see my other photos for reference.  But all the same, I love low-fi photo.  I don’t know why. Zombie TueZday: LostZombies

Toronto Zombie Walk - Zombie Girl

Toronto Zombie Walk - Zombie Girl

Ask on twitter and ye shall recieve.  I haven’t written a post for Zombie TueZdays in quite a while.  It’s time to get back on that damned horse and start riding again.  Within minutes of asking for zombie stuff to post about, LostZombies started following me.  I was inspired.  I think that from here on out I am going to start asking for stuff on twitter if I need anything again.  So anyway, yeah, LostZombies.

LostZombies is a cool idea.  It’s a social development project, basically.  They are gathering as many people as want to be involved to help make a documentary of the zombie apocalypse before there is nobody left to see it.  I am not sure what else they have their grubby, bloody little fingers in, but I wouldn’t put any body parts near the zombies that go for a stroll down my street, thanks.  If anyone wants to enlighten me further as to who the person is in the photo I would be appreciative.  For now all I can say is that it came from LostZombies.com and you can see the source by clicking the picture.  Support the information gathering before we are all consumed by the zombie horde!

Stumble:
Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should

Posted in General Blogging, Web Stuff on April 20th, 2009 by Ast

Suppose you are sitting there at your desk, hitting the “Stumble” button over and over and over again.  All of a sudden the article to end all articles has appeared on your screen.  You want to give it a thumbs up, but you pause.  Suppose another person is cruising the net and comes across a site that they love.  They have installed stumble and make the move for the thumbs up button.  They, too, pause and think.  Every Stumbler now has the burden of Stumble responsibility.  You are ultimately making a choice for, potentially, millions of people across the internet when you hit the ‘thumbs up’ button.  You are saying “look at what I found.  You should see this too.”

Fuck Everything, Were Doing Five Blades

Fuck Everything, We're Doing Five Blades

So, let’s suppose that you found an article.  The one from the screencap here will do nicely.  This article is from The Onion, a site dedicated to making up the news daily.  I suspect they make a lot of money making up the news.  Honestly, I really like The Onion… sometimes.  Now, let’s consider this article, it’s funny, yes.  It is commentary on something that is totally ridiculous, yes.  It is from The Onion.  This last, or first point, depending on how you read it, should give you pause.  The onion is well known.  People will go to this site anyway, simply because they know that it is a good escape from Google News and the real world.  It’s like a left-wing intellectual version of Mad Magazine.  Long and short, people may well find this article without your help at all. Anonymous and Domestic Terrorism

Anonymous

Anonymous

About a week ago, I discovered something about a group that I have become interested in over the past year.  Much like my interest in the Masons, I also find Anonymous really interesting.  Now, from what I know of Anonymous, even members of Anonymous don’t really know anything about Anonymous.  Even better than that, one member of Anonymous has no control or knowledge of what any other member is up to.

Now, I for what I actually found out…  Anonymous is considered a domestic terror group.  Wait, let’s recap.  Anonymous is now considered a domestic terror group!  Now, why is this?  First, let’s consider the document that this is coming from.  The state of Virginia releases a document once a year reviewing all of the terror groups that they should be concerned about.  Starting on page 45, they review Anonymous and what makes them so terrifying.  Let’s have a look-see, shall we?

My time to whine

Posted in General Blogging on April 18th, 2009 by Ast

So, I have been reading a LOT of different authors lately, and I am starting to come to a decision. Most authors suck. I don’t mean that most authors should find another career or anything that unreasonable. I just mean that people seem to really like reading bad writing. I mean really bad. Trashy romance novel bad. I can’t stand it. Worse than this, I’m not even really in a place to have the authority to criticize. I have no educational cred. I’m just some slum-boy mathematician and yet, here I am trash talking authors. Who am I anyway? Read more »

Ashton v CNN and Jimmy Roc

Posted in General Blogging, Web Stuff on April 17th, 2009 by Ast

It appears that Ashton made it to his million follower goal on Twitter.  So here’s the question, did he beat CNN to a million?  Who knows?  Personally I don’t follow either.  No offence to anyone, I don’t follow many people.  I just don’t have the patience to wade through the messages from people that I don’t know to find the ones I do.

Right now my wife is watching the episode of Oprah that she recorded earlier today.  Oprah started a Twitter account TODAY and by the time the show was filmed she already had 72.3 thousand… this bears repeating SEVENTY TWO POINT THREE THOUSAND followers.  How do we reconcile this kind of following today?  I can’t imagine what a crowd of 72K would even look like!  I’m shocked.  I mean I am totally blown away.

Anyway, I am curious as to whether Ashton is going to deliver said video of ding-dong-ditching Ted Turner.  I mean, Oprah has outed Anonymous, and anyone that knows anything about Anonymous knows that Anonymous can still deliver, but the question is, can Ashton?

Other quick comments, I would like to give a personal, public thanks to Jimmy Roc, founder of YouAintRock.com.  He mentioned Blog O Doom today in the blog, get this, about this (click, damn you!) blog post!  Thanks Jimmy and You ARE Rock!

Snort

Snort

This is another one-take.  I wanted to move away from the TV idiom and into a new realm.  I generally like to desaturate my photos.  I am not a big fan of outrageous bright and bold colors.  But on the other hand, I don’t really like the idea of moving to entirely black and white.  I want to leave a hint of color to suggest what once was, but also express the feeling of looking at something at twilight, when colors lose their intensity and things appear to be more in shades of gray.  Only the strongest colors still show through.

Fix Me

Fix Me

Fix Me

This is the last of the television pieces that I produced in this line of thought.  I am happiest with this one as it is a single shot that I took.  It took a few rounds of trying to preoduce the final image over the course of several days.  Eventually, after working through several different frames, angles and aperatures, I finally found this.  The biggest complaint that I have is that TVs have a wicked slow refresh rate so you never really the whole screen all lit up.

Once the shot was complete, I color corrected and added noise to create a dirtier look.  I love the feeling of distressed low tech.  It always conveys this aged, overused feel that I really want my viewers to experience with me.
