Michael and the Coat-Riders

Posted in Web Stuff on June 30th, 2009 by Ast

Yes, we are all aware that on Thursday of last week, Michael Jackson bit the big one. He shuffled off his mortal coil and gave his solemn goodbyes to Neverland Ranch. We get it. People keep talking and talking and talking about this death, but why?

I have heard posthumous comparisons of Michael Jackson, AKA Wacko Jacko, to Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa. I have heard people talk about his music and life as if they were the second coming of fucking Christ. I have heard people say all kinds of things that just floor me.

Moreover, I find myself avoiding conversations with people about Michael Jackson that weren’t even fans of his music when he was still alive and kickin’. Now there are three coat-riders that I would like to call out, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Barack Obama. Read more »

Field Trip: Club Deadline

Dancer at Club Deadline

Dancer at Club Deadline

New tricks, new photos, I have added a set of photos the gallery.  I made my first outing to Club Deadline last night.  I am not sure why I didn’t do this before.  Good times were had and I took a bunch of photos.

I did some experimenting with ambient light and flash effects and I think that I found a happy middle.  I really like the way that ambient-light photos look since they say something about the environment, but I also really like the clear, crisp look of a well-lit subject.

With a pure flash photo, nothing is said about the environment, but you know a lot about the subject.  With ambient-light photos you know a lot about your subject but significantly less about your subject, so I thought, “What if I found some way to present both?”

I figured it out.  I won’t go into the technical details here, but suffice to say, sometimes a camera strap is a sufficient tripod.  Just a note on the photo in this post, photoshop was only used to do final color adjustment and resizing.  Nothing was added to this photo, it was exposed this way.  I think I have found a new methodology that I love.

Field Trip: DOMINION

Industrial Girl

Industrial Girl

Sooooo… I got back from vacation and before the rubber even cooled on my tires, I was off to a club opening.  I am still paying for that one.  Remind me to never EVER drive for 8+ hours and then turn around and stay out until 2AM, regardless of how much fun I am having, k?

Anyway, DOMINION.  It’s a brand new club in San Diego, and it is open to an 18+ crowd.  Now, before you start whining that 18+ clubs suck, let me remind you of the fact that LA has a history of mighty successful 18+ clubs.  They are fun, the people that are over 21 get to pour toxins down their throats and everyone has a good time.

This is what DOMINION was like.  4 rooms, 1 bar and a crowd so dense that you couldn’t swing a cat without hitting someone, but who swings cats any more anyway?

The place stayed busy until 2 and I’m talking shoulder-to-shoulder through the whole night.  It was a sight to behold on a Sunday.  Needless to say, I was impressed.  I heard people comparing the club to Das Bunker.  Cheers to the crew!

Full set of photos here: Photo Album, yaaaaaay!!

Social Media and Trent Reznor

Posted in Web Stuff on June 11th, 2009 by Ast

So, apparently Trent Reznor and Twitter had a falling out, but this was over something in Metal Sludge?  In a post to the Nine Inch Nails forums, Trent Reznor voices his disgust at the “idiots [who] rule.”  If this sounds a little strange and confusing to you, you’re not alone.  I don’t quite know the details of what happened, but apparently someone took a crap in Trent’s Post Toasties and he’s all bent out of shape. Fixing the Music Industry Problem

Posted in Web Stuff on June 11th, 2009 by Ast

By now, I am certain that you are familiar with the sad, sad state of affairs in big music.  I am not talking about indie labels and the like that are quickly moving in new, innovative directions to continue providing quality music to a hungry public, but rather the big boys.  That’s right, Sony, CBS and the like are in pretty rough shape.  Even if they aren’t specifically in financial trouble right now, they will be soon enough.

All of the problems that the big music companies are complaining about revolve around the fact that the face of business is changing for them and they aren’t nimble enough to change direction and save themselves.  They are large and monolithic, moreover, they rely on statistics too much and gut instinct far too little.  They are doomed to crumble to dust, or are they? Carrie of Carrie Rawks

Carrie of Carrie Rawks

Normally when I go on a field trip it’s to somewhere morbid like a cemetery.  Honestly, I really like cemeteries, but there are only a limited number of them that I can drive to easily.  Since nobody is paying me to take photos as of yet, I’m going to have to continue to hit places that don’t cost me too much time or money. Twitter: Harnessing Chaos of the Masses

Posted in General Blogging on June 5th, 2009 by Ast

Lately I have seen articles about Twitter and how people interact with it.  One in particular finally relly got me thinking about this particular social media platform, “Twitter Conversations: Twitter is a One Way Road.”  In this article the author states that Twitter is little more than a broadcasting medium similar to RSS, and they use it as such.  Apparently there are other people that feel much the same way.

This perspective seems to lack insight into what the average Twitter user actually does.  First off, Harvard Business Data states that 10% of Twitter users account for 90% of all twitter content.  Though this may technically be true, let us consider what this really means.  Either that 10% spends 100% of their work day writing tweets or they have some bot that posts almost incessantly.  This is probably not what much of the other 90% of users do, they just aren’t as visible.  Perhaps we should say that most of the content on Twitter is business-broadcast related, but most of the users are probably not.  This is an important distinction. Reporters Interviewing Reporters

Posted in Web Stuff on June 4th, 2009 by Ast

First I have to say, really?  REALLY?

Most of the time I don’t really care what reporters have to say. They tend to add personal nuance to their message and offer a bunch of personal insight that I could do without. Most of the time I am just as happy, if not happier, to read the news online where I can add my own thoughts as I read. Lately, there has been a new trend: reporters interviewing reporters.  This is second level I couldn’t give a shit.

Now, this is not that interview with Larry King, though I didn’t give a shit about that either.  This is one reporter interviewing another reporter about world issues that they are not experts on. The only people that voice opinions about world affairs that I care less about than general reporters are Hollywood celebrities.

Don’t misunderstand me, there are people that are on TV specifically to be political or economic commentators.  Many of these people have degrees in Political Science or Economics.  Though they might not be the utmost in authority, at least they specialized in the field in college.  Most reporters majored in communications, theater or journalism.  This gives you no inherent right to have an opinion on ANYTHING that matters in the world scope.

Short version of all of this, Reporters, stop pontificating and just tell me what is going on.  Your opinion is not important to me and I would rather think for myself, so would you let me already?  Thanks.
