Professional Photography: Yeah, About That…

Posted in General Blogging, Photography on July 31st, 2009 by Ast

So you just went out and bought your very first, brand spankin’ new DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex camera for the uninitiated). Now you have taken a couple of hundred photos of your significant other, their cat, the back door, the carpet, your left shoe and anything else that looks remotely artsy. You have played with the on-board flash and you have moved out of the box, from your main program option on the camera to the landscape,  portrait and pseudo-macro settings. You think you are hot shit.

Now you have decided that you are going to start taking professional photographs. You are going to go and develop some haphazard portfolio.  A portfolio that demonstrates you have no focus and your voice has not developed, I might add. You will pull together the shots that you are proudest of and compile them for the world to see. You want EVERYONE to know that you are the new camera wielding mofo on the block and you are going to shoot any- and everything that comes your way. Get ‘em tiger. Read more »

Pedobear

Pedobear

Comic Con International, better known as ‘Con’ to the regulars, happened this past weekend.  This year I SWORE I wasn’t going to go. For the past couple of years I have attended as a pro and reaped all of the rewards(??) that come with the privilege.  So, a mere two days before Con, I was at a friend’s house. The question came up: are you going to Con?

“No,” I said.

“What?? Why?”

“‘Cause I have no good reason to be there.”

“But you go every year.”

“But not this year.”

This went on for a while and then she left the room. A little later she returned, bemoaning the fact that she had a four-day pass that she couldn’t give away. This went on for a while and finally I caved.  So I attended. Again. Whee. Read more »

Dancer at Club DOMINION

Dancer at Club DOMINION

With every club shoot that I do, I try to learn something that I didn’t know before.  I feel like my shots tell the story a little more clearly each shoot and my style is starting to emerge.

My goal is to take the highest-quality shots with the best story told.  The picture to the left is probably my favorite of the evening.  To the unnamed dancer, you’re interesting to photograph and I thank you, sir.

Ads and Twitter Not Popular, Teens Say

Posted in Web Stuff on July 15th, 2009 by Ast

Twitter

So, there I am, sitting in front of my computer, reading the words written by some 15- or 16-year-old, and they are stating that Twitter is not popular.  (Tsk tsk, Tech Crunch)  Why do they say this?  Because they surveyed their (also teen-aged) friends and none of them like it.  Dandy.

Honestly, adults like to have things they can enjoy as well.  Moreover, I really couldn’t give a fuck and a rat baby whether or not some pubescent know-it-all thinks that something is popular or not.  When it comes right down to it, if teens aren’t interested, it’s fine. Read more »

What’s New with Sacha Baron Cohen?

Posted in Web Stuff on July 13th, 2009 by Ast

In short: nothing.  The fish out of water act is getting old.  I came across an article about Mr. Cohen and they were asking what’s next now that he has finished filming, and has now released, Bruno.  The problem is that whatever is next will probably resemble the work that he has already done.

Let’s start off with a review.  Borat: It was a fish out of water movie about a guy named Borat that comes to the United States and interacts with people in the public, causing outrage and doing things that are socially unacceptable.  The humor was lackluster and the movie was a test of my patience. What the Market Will Bear

Posted in Web Stuff on July 8th, 2009 by Ast

I read an article that got my mind rolling in a way that it hasn’t gone for, oh… hours.  An article by Nick Harkaway called “Insulting?” discussed, in brief, the cost of selling e-books and the price of purchase.  As well he talked about consumers and what they are willing to pay for products.

First I would like to say that I can’t really disagree with anything that Harkaway says.  I think that in general, the market is stupid.  People want something for nothing and they want something of value without offering anything in return.  This is the very nature of the way that people behave.  They tell you this in any lower-division economics course.

Harkaway also tells us that this behavior has been cultivated over the past 10 or 15 years.  I agree, and there is one particular culprit, though I am not going to reveal “him” just yet.  People have gotten used to paying nothing for what they want and it does start to affect the marketplace.  It’s just too easy anymore, honestly and with intellectual goods if you look long enough in the right places, you can pull them practically from the air. Zombie TueZdays: Breathers

Undead Anonymous: Breathers

Undead Anonymous: Breathers

It’s been a few weeks and I had this sitting in my in-box, from myself for a while.  Short version, it’s time for me to post another zombie something-or-other.

Breathers is a story about a man who dies and becomes a zombie.  He finds unlife difficult as he is cast out of the old life that he knew and into the role of social pariah until he starts attending Undead Anonymous meetings.  Then follows all kinds of wackiness including zombie rights trials.  Though I have yet to read the book, the synopsis sells the book for me.  I think it has officially gone on the list.  Perhaps I will review it elsewhere, if you know what I mean.

Pedobear, Now You’re a Real Boy

Pedobear Plush

Pedobear Plush

Being that you are a real boy, you can now molest yourself.  Good job.  It creeps me out a little that a weird little drawing of a child-molesting teddy bear which frequents bulletin boards like 4Chan has now been made into a real teddy bear.  How long will it take before we hear reports of this plush doll coming to life like Chucky and assaulting children in their sleep?  Internet community, this time you may have gone too far.  Do you realize what you have unleashed on the world?
