Paper v. Electronic

There has been talk of e-book readers and, around my circle, it’s all about the Kindle. I don’t mean that everyone I know has a kindle so much as if an e-book reader comes up in conversation, it is, most likely, the Kindle. Whether is is talk of e-books on NPR, Arnie’s new move to get public schools on to e-books or just “hey, what do you think of getting an e-book,” Amazon’s Kindle comes up first.

I think it is the hype. Sony has a reader, I’ll bet that there is a Toshiba reader out there too. Amazon isn’t the only company in town making an e-book reader, but they get a lot of talk. Mindshare, my marketing-minded buddies would say. For me, the bigger question isn’t so much which reader to purchase so much as whether I should actually purchase one at all.

So, I have to take into account the nature of an e-book reader. It’s a small computer that displays readable text to the screen. You can load it up with books and magazines and newspapers and all kinds of other readable goodies. So far so good. Read more »

BlogODoom.com Turns Two

Posted in Web Stuff on August 9th, 2009 by Ast

Much like your standard bobble-headed toddler, BlogODoom.com has done a lot of growing since its founding, back in 2007. August 9th, a day that will go down in infamy for no particularly good reason.  That was the day that I founded this fine pile of crap web publication.  Incidentally, that was about the same time that I discovered Stumble Upon.

Not being content simply thumbing some sites up and some down, I had to share the REALLY cool stuff with BoingBoingesque enthusiasm.  Sadly, I was destined not to be NEARLY as cool.  Fortunately, I discovered that I actually had a voice of my own and I could create original content. That was a really cool day for me and a really unfortunate day for my “readers.” Read more »

Celuloid: Do it, it’s good for you

Film Cameras

Film Cameras

I had originally written an entire blog post here. It was something like 1200 words and rambled on and on about all kinds of things. Perhaps this post should actually be called Celuloid II: Return of the Rambling Photographer, but I hate sequels, especially when the first one stunk.

So, a couple of days ago I got a gift. It was something I was most definitely not expecting, since I was told that it was something that had gone away a long time ago. What am I babbling about? A 50’s era medium format camera. I’m not going to go into how cool I think it is, or how excited I am to get the prints back and see what mad creations I might have conjured. Suffice to say, I was really excited about the camera, got it cleaned up and I have already shot a roll of film.

AHA! Film, that’s what I was going to talk about. So, about a year or so ago, I picked up a Diana from Lomography. It’s fun and it does weird stuff to your film, but after a while the novelty wears off and you are left with a cheap plastic camera that you enjoyed intensly and then set aside. I will, undoubtedly, pull it out from time to time and shoot with it again, but right now I have more high-fidelity aspirations. Read more »
