Keel-Haul the Bastards!

It is worth noting that the talk of race has become more pronounced over the past eight and a half months since President Obama took office. It is also worth noting that there have been many people of many different “colors” in the spotlight lately. Some for doing the right thing, some for doing the wrong, and that is kind of typical. Perhaps now is a perfect time to reflect on what is happening in the United States right now.

I was watching PBS last night and there was a discussion being conducted about racism in America and the effect on political views.  There were two people that were arguing that disagreeing with someone based on their proposals was tantamount to being racist as you can’t separate race from political standpoint. There was one man that was claiming that racism exists, but it doesn’t matter any more and finally one man stated that race and political perspective were unrelated. Read more »

Righteous Indignance: It’s In Vogue, Didn’t You Hear?

I had forgotten about something that happened to me last year on September 11. I had forgotten until the Onion did a piece about people not masturbating in observance of 9/11. It all came rushing back to me. I was unlocking my bike and preparing to head home when someone asked me something I didn’t quite hear.

When Did the Dance Stop?

Something has been building in me over the past few years.  Everything is becoming electronic. Everything is becoming tech. Everything is geek. Geek is chic. All of a sudden, everything is fast. Technique is outmatched by technology. Life is fast and there is little to slow it down.

More than life simply getting faster, everything has a virtual buffer now.  I look at my camera and it is electronic with a screen on the back. My TV blinds me to what is happening just outside my window and e-mail has usurped the standard mail throne with regard to sending letters. Packages will always need shipping, one way or another.

A little story: Ansel Adams, a well known photographer and accepted progenitor of the photographic Zone system, took some of the best known photos in the United States. When documenting the Zone system, he made mention that it is useful for both black and white images as well as color. He also scryed with his impossible photo-mirror of soothsaying and foretold the digital age.  Ansel knew that the digital age was nigh. Read more »
