It’s the Fanboy Killer

Posted in General Blogging, Web Stuff on January 27th, 2010 by Ast

I hate fanboys. I hate ‘em. I would hate ‘em with hammers and big rocks if it were legal. I’m so sick of hearing everyone talk about everything as the “device killer.” Why does every new product have to kill another product? People are far too interested in how to destroy something that actually serves a purpose and fills a need.

The latest device killer is the iPad. Apple fanboys (and fangirls) started up about how the iPad is the Kindle killer or the netbook killer. The iPad isn’t going to kill either of those markets. Here’s why: the Kindle and many netbooks are well under the $500 price tag Apple has set for their product.

In the end, I have yet to see any product come out to date that has outright killed all other competing products. Moreover, what people really mean is market domination. You can’t kill an inanimate object. It won’t happen, sorry.

I’ve decided, though, that if an Apple product can be a device killer, I can be the Fanboy killer. That’s right, any time I hear a fanboy start spouting off about this or that product that they just can’t live without, I am going to go through and meticulously find every issue with the product I can until it becomes obvious that the product they were so gaga over was just a big hunk of garbage.

That’s a lie. I’ll just punch ‘em in the dick.

In ending, the next time you have the urge to say that the product you’re are all starrey eyed over is going to be the “x device” killer, just remember I might be right behind you with my tire iron, AKA the fanboy killer.

What Happened to American Metal?

Posted in General Blogging on January 26th, 2010 by Ast

Lately I’ve been back on a metal kick. I’ve been listening to Katatonia quite a bit and Type O Negative cycles through my listening stack with regularity. I got into drone doom a year ago, or less, so Nadja, Sunn O))) and Black Boned Angel have been in regular rotation. I’ve also dug out some of the old stuff like Ride the Lightning from Metallica, Countdown to Extinction from Megadeth, Seasons in the Abyss by Slayer and Arise from Sepultura.

You may or may not have heard of some of those artists. That’s really beside the point. What I’ve come to realize is, American metal now is hardly worth listening to. For quite a while I couldn’t quite understand what happened, but it dawned on me today. Read more »

Corporate Viral Turds

Posted in General Blogging, Web Stuff on January 20th, 2010 by Ast

In an open letter posted by Damian of OK Go, he talked about the success of their early music videos which were made and posted on YouTube for all to see and share. He talks about the difficulties inherent in the new system, i.e. the record labels want a cut of the pie so allowing embedding of videos has become a taboo.

Understandably, it is challenging to continue to produce quality content and push it out to the world when your hands are tied by the people selling your music. All the same, something was mentioned that got under my skin. Damian stated, “there are Madison Avenue firms that specialize in ‘viral marketing.’”

Though there are agencies that attempt to push out viral marketing, like the skating babies, there are two challenges they have yet to overcome. First, people don’t care what the video quality is. Second, just because people spread it all over the internet doesn’t mean they will remember what it was about. Read more »

All Your Equipment are Belong to Us (Redux)

Posted in Web Stuff on January 18th, 2010 by Ast

I’ve posted about companies acting as if they own the equipment I purchased, before. Verizon appears to have, not only not heeded my words, but they are actively pursuing behavior I find disgusting.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have heard many stories of Verizon pushing an update out to customers using Blackberries. This update has done all kinds of nastiness to the victimized phones. Anything from simply installing a Bing app, which takes up 5 megs of space, to overwriting apps and purchased content and deleting other apps that were originally on the phone. Read more »

When Apple Fanboys Rule the World

Posted in General Blogging, Web Stuff on January 10th, 2010 by Ast

Apple mania is really getting out of hand. I can’t recall the last time when someone has said “you’ve never used X company’s product? I can’t take you seriously.” Apple fanboys/fangirls live on a different planet. Poking around on BoingBoing, I discovered commentary on the CEO of Palm, claiming they couldn’t take him seriously because he’s yet to use an iPhone.

Understandably, Jon Rubenstein should be familiar with Apple to one degree or another, but to say he’s not to be taken seriously because he, personally, hasn’t tried their product seems out of line. It would be much like calling Steve Ballmer out because he’s never used Ubuntu. Who cares? Read more »

Radio Killed the Video Star

Posted in Web Stuff on January 8th, 2010 by Ast

I stopped, poked my head out of the hole and looked around. Though I saw my shadow on the ground, which means we’ll have at least one more day with the sun in the sky, the more important thing I noticed is that things have reversed in the music world. Video isn’t key anymore and radio, of a sort, is taking control again.

The Buggles wrote the song “Video Killed the Radio Star” in the early 80’s and it aptly described the revolution that came with MTV. Throughout the remainder of the 80’s, MTV showed music videos and lots of them. They were right there helping to usher in hair metal, and rap. They introduced us to Metallica with One and girls with big butts thanks to Sir Mix-a-Lot. Then came the real world. Read more »

Doomcast No. 2

Posted in General Blogging, Web Stuff on January 1st, 2010 by Ast

This is my second Doomcast where I talk about 2009, say ‘umm’ and ‘like’ a lot and then reveal that I hate it when people do that. Nothing like a little bit of annoying oneself at the beginning of the year. I have also discovered how challenging it is to write while a rodent attempts to ski down the front of your shirt repeatedly. So before my pet rat, Molly, drives me insane, here’s the podcast:
